MEMPHIS, TN (ABC 24 News) — Some Hickory Hill residents aren’t waiting around for someone else to find a solution to Memphis’ crime problem.

In 2023, Memphis hit a record number of homicides, and car thefts are continuing to skyrocket. As of Monday, there have been 16 homicides in Memphis, compared to 19 this time last year.

Stewart first voiced her concerns about Memphis crime at an ABC24 Let’s Talk. Then, ABC24 sat down with Stewart and her neighbors about the issues. They’re now meeting with the Memphis Police Department.

“I don’t like the name that has been given to Hickory Hill: Hickory Hood. To me that has a very negative connotation, and I don’t like that at all,” neighbor Tina Stewart said.

The neighbors are hoping they can help decrease the number of incidents and improve the community’s relationship with MPD.

“Since 2007, I have seen a change, but I believe that we can go back to where Hickory Hill was a great place to live, because we can all come together and work together to make it happen,” MPD’s Adrienna Hill said.

MPD’s public safety map shows nearly 800 incidents in the Hickory Hill area in 2023. In 2022, there were just over 800.

“They’re shooting almost every other night over here in Ridgeway Estates,” neighbor Janice Wilson said. “Do you think I’m not calling?”

One of the biggest issues Memphis faces is juvenile crime.

“The goal obviously is prevention,” MPD’s Officer Chris Williams said. “We don’t want to just show up; we don’t want you to get to 16 to 17 [years old] and have a [long] rap sheet. We want to get involved and be there and guide our youth, our juveniles.”

The next step is a bigger meeting. On Monday, Jan. 29, you can head out to the first Ridgeway Station Neighborhood Watch meeting of 2024.

“At the end of the day, we work for them, we want work with them, and we want to drive crime down in this city,” MPD’s Major Andrew Brown said.

Queremos involucrarnos y estar ahí y guiar a nuestra juventud, a nuestros jóvenes”.
