NGO vessel rescues 113 migrants in central Mediterranean

Rome, Dec 27 (EFE).- The Ocean Viking ship operated by humanitarian organization SOS Méditerranée has rescued 113 migrants from a rubber boat in the central Mediterranean, the NGO said on Tuesday.

Among those picked up in the late-night operation were “23 women, some are pregnant, around 30 unaccompanied minors and 3 babies with the youngest being only 3 weeks old,” SOS Méditerranée wrote on Twitter.

The operation was difficult because it took place at night, according to SOS Méditerranée.

The Ocean Viking is currently the only rescue ship in the central Mediterranean. Other NGO ships are docked in ports such as Livorno, Italy.

Last week, the Life Support vessel, run by NGO Emergency, arrived in Livorno with 114 migrants, while the German NGO ship Sea-Eye ship also rescued 108 people.

So far this year, some 101,127 migrants have reached Italian shores, compared to the 64,612 who had done so within the same period last year. EFE
