Cuba blames US, Nato for Ukraine war
Moscow, Nov 30 (EFE).- Cuba’s National Assembly president Esteban Lazo Hernández on Wednesday condemned the economic sanctions Western countries have imposed on Russia and said that the war in Ukraine was provoked by US and Nato military forces operating near to the Russian border.
“Cuba warned that the conflict in Ukraine could have been avoided if the United States and Nato had not approached the borders of the Russian Federation and if the alliance had not imposed an increasingly offensive military doctrine,” said Lazo Hernández in a speech before the Russian Senate.
The speaker of Cuba’s parliament underlined that for decades Russia’s requests for security guarantees were ignored.
He condemned the “unilateral sanctions adopted against the Russian Federation by the governments of the West in general and the US in particular,” and called for a negotiated solution that considered Russia’s interests.
Lazo Hernández also thanked Russia for its solidarity with Cuba amid what he described as the “criminal policy” of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on the island by the US over 60 years ago.
The politician called for stronger bilateral ties between the nations and invited Russian firms to participate in Cuba’s national plan for economic and social development which runs until 2030.
“We consider it imperative for Russian companies to actively participate in investment projects in Cuba.” EFE
