Spain’s Prado museum acquires Alonso Cano’s Goddess Juno

Madrid, Jun 8 (EFE).- The Prado museum in Madrid on Tuesday showcased ‘Goddess Juno,’ a rare mythological artwork by Spanish painter Alonso Cano.

The museum acquired the painting, which was discovered in a private collection in the 1990s, for about $328,000 after two years of negotiations.

Andres Ubeda, the museum’s deputy director of Conservation and Research, and Javier Portus, head of the department of Spanish Painting until 1700, added the work of art to the museum’s Cano collection, comprising 19 paintings and over 30 drawings.

Goddess Juno dates back to the 17th century between 1638 and 1652, when Cano was in Madrid working on the decoration of the Royal Alcazar.

During the pandemic, the Prado, one of world’s best-known art museums, continued to monitor the art market, private collections and antique dealers, which enabled it to acquire Cano’s painting, according to Ubeda.

Cano was one of the greatest artists of the Spanish Golden Age.
