1 woman dead, 8 wounded in Chicago mass shooting

Miami, Jul 30 (EFE).- One woman died and eight others were wounded, one seriously, just before 1 am on Sunday morning in Chicago when several people got out of a Jeep and opened fire on them as they were gathered together on the street.

Chicago police said that nobody has been arrested yet for the attack, which killed a 21-year-old woman who has not yet been identified.

The woman died from a gunshot wound to the face at Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she arrived in critical condition via ambulance.

Another 28-year-old woman was shot eight times in the torso and remains in critical condition at the same hospital.

Authorities said that the women were standing together in a group on a street in the North Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side when several people got out of a black Jeep and began firing.

The other injured women, ranging in age from 20 to 33, suffered gunshot wounds mainly to the legs and arms, although one of them reportedly was hit by a single bullet in the abdomen.

Chicago police said Sunday that they are working to identify and arrest the shooters and called on the community for help in moving the investigation forward.

Chicago police said Sunday that at least 41 people had been shot, including four fatal shootings, in the metro area so far during the weekend.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, which keeps track of gun violence in the US, there have been 416 mass shootings – that is, shootings in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter – in this country so far in 2023.
