Ukraine freezes assets of former president Poroshenko in treason case

Kyiv, Jan 6 (EFE).- A Kyiv court has ordered the seizure of all of Petro Poroshenko’s assets as part of a high treason investigation relating to the former Ukrainian president’s alleged financing of Russian-backed separatists.

The decision was taken during a district court hearing on Thursday, Interfax-Ukraine reported. The judge agreed with the prosecutor’s demand to freeze Poroshenko’s real estate property, land and assets in several private companies.

On December 20, 2021, Ukrainian state bureau of investigations charged Poroshenko with high treason in a case related to the purchase of coal from temporarily occupied territories in Eastern Ukraine during his presidency between 2014 and 2019.

Poroshenko has said the charges were politically motivated. He announced Thursday he would return to Ukraine from abroad on January 17 and will request a meeting with the General prosecutor. EFE
