UN: Over 5.7 million refugees have fled Ukraine since Russian invasion

Geneva, May 5 (EFE).- The Russian invasion of Ukraine has forced up to 5.7 million refugees out of the country, the United Nations Refugee Agency reported Thursday.

Over 3.1 million Ukrainian refugees have fled to Poland while some 854,000 to Romania.

The UN agency added that some 1.43 million refugees have returned to Ukraine since the war began over two months ago, although the figure is yet to be consolidated as many are re-entering the country temporarily.

An additional 7.7 million Ukrainians have been internally displaced as a consequence of the war, tallying the overall number of people forced out of their homes to 13 million, over a quarter of the Ukrainian population, according to the UN.

It is the largest exodus of refugees in Europe since the Second World War, according to the humanitarian agency. EFE
