Alcaraz rolls over Zverev to take Madrid Masters 1000

Madrid, May 8 (EFE).- Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday earned the fifth tennis title of his career and his fourth so far this season, downing the reigning champion, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, in the Madrid Open 6-3 and 6-1 in an hour and two minutes.

Alcaraz, who on Monday will move up to No. 6 in the world, according to the ATP rankings, so far has managed to defeat three of the world’s top four tennis players, besting No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, and then in the quarterfinals No. 4 Rafael Nadal, the winner of 21 Grand Slams.

Now, in Madrid, he cleaned up against the No. 3-ranked German tourney champ.

Alcaraz is the youngest player ever to win the Madrid tournament and also the youngest to beat Nadal and Djokovic.

The win on Sunday is his second victory in a Masters 1000 contest, the most important on the Grand Slam circuit.

The 19-year-old Spanish phemonenon is the youngest player since Nadal to win five tourneys, with his countryman winning a total of seven when he was the same age in 2004-2005.

Alcaraz, who now has racked up seven consecutive wins against “Top Ten” players, has a total of 28 wins so far this season, more than anyone else.

Before the final, he was tied with Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in terms of victories, but the Madrid Open win puts him into the lead this season having suffered just three defeats.

Meanwhile, Great Britain’s Neal Skupski and his Dutch partner, Wesley Koolhof, took the doubles trophy at the Madrid tourney, prevailing 6-7 (4), 6-4 and 10-5 over Spanish pair Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.
