MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — El esfuerzo continuo para hacer que Beale Street sea lo más segura y agradable posible está creando algunos cambios para la icónica calle este verano.
A partir del viernes por la noche, este fin de semana, la forma en que las personas se forman para llegar a Beale Street está cambiando. Es el primer cambio que se realiza después de que la ciudad contrató a un consultor para mejorar Beale Street.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) —The ongoing effort to make Beale Street as safe and enjoyable as possible is creating some changes for the iconic street this summer.
Starting Friday night, just for this weekend, the way people line up to get onto Beale Street is changing. It’s the first change being made after the city brought in a consultant to improve Beale Street.
“They primarily include a more efficient way of dealing with the crowd and hopefully a better visitor experience but also mitigating the risk of overcrowding,” Jennifer Oswalt, president of Downtown Memphis Commission, said.
There will be changes to the entrance at Beale and 2nd streets after recommendations were presented by security consultant Event Risk Management Solutions in May.
“It’s going to be more lanes with a more efficient flow. So there will be a table for you to put some things down while you’re being scanned and having the wand go over you,” Oswalt said.
The consultant discovered 45 percent of Beale Street visitors on Saturday summer nights entered at the 2nd Street entrance.
Long lines and a bad experience threatened to harm the street’s reputation.
There will be other small changes, too. Port-a-potties will be added to Beale Street to improve the experience.
“A lot of small tweaks that will make a better visitor experience but also increase safety,” Oswalt said.
In May the consultant presented a total of 38 preliminary recommendations to city council. Some of them included:
Memphis police and private security interacting more with patrons
Setting a capacity limit for Beale Street
Implementing a new cover charge during peak hours 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekends
Earlier this year, the council voted to ban a cover charge for the street. Memphis City Council Chairman Berlin Boyd said there’s no plan to bring it back this year.
People will also be directed to enter at B.B. King and Beale where the lines are much shorter.
There are plans to add more security cameras and change the way police officers patrol the street.
