New Shelter for Homeless Women in Shelby County

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) — You might not even notice them. Homeless people are ignored. But 37% of them are women. And will not be ignored much longer.

Memphis and Shelby County have cut a deal.

In a place that sometimes is considered cold and cruel to homeless, especially women, comes this.

Hospitality Hub, a non-profit group that deals with homelessness, will run a new women’s shelter, and a place where all homeless can stay at during the day.

It will be at the old City Auto Inspection station on Washington.

It is something that Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland says is needed.

“It addresses two challenges. Number one, not enough emergency shelter beds for women. And number two, we as a community do not do enough to help with the homeless during the day,” said Strickland.”

“Men always have somewhere to go. And in Memphis, women just don’t have anywhere to sleep at night. With the growth in homeless population nationwide, there’s just a lot of homeless in Shelby County and 37% is female,” said Kelcey Johnson with Hospitality Hub.

There is no date on construction of the women’s shelter, which will sit on top of the old Inspection station.
