AmeriCorps Works To Clear Out Invasive Plants From Overton Park
MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/localmemphis.com) — Los miembros de AmeriCorps están trabajando para eliminar las especies de plantas invasoras de Overton Park.
El equipo pasará dos semanas en el área natural de Old Forest State en Overton Park para eliminar las guías de la hiedra inglesa, junto con plantas invasoras leñosas como mahonia, nandina y mata de madreselva.
Las plantas fueron traídas a los Estados Unidos como paisajes ornamentales, pero ahora están desplazando a las más de 200 especies de plantas nativas en la naturaleza.
“Debido a que fueron traídos aquí, no tienen ningún depredador natural, como insectos o insectos que los coman, por lo que se quedan mucho más tiempo que nuestros árboles naturales”, dice Pierce Curran con AmeriCorps. “Y así, queremos eliminarlos y asegurarse de que haya suficiente espacio para que las especies nativas florezcan”.
Además de su trabajo en Overton Park, el equipo también trabajará para restaurar senderos y rehabilitar el borde del campo forestal en Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) — Members of the AmeriCorps are working to clear out invasive species from Overton Park.
The team will spend two weeks in the Old Forest State Natural Area at Overton Park to remove removing English Ivy vines, along with woody invasive plants like mahonia, nandina, and bush honeysuckle.
The plants were brought to the U.S. as ornamental landscapes but are now crowding out the more than 200 native plant species in the wild.
“Because they were brought here, they don’t have any natural predators, like bugs or insects that will eat them, so they stick around a lot longer than our natural trees,” says Pierce Curran with AmeriCorps. “And so, we want to clear them out to make sure there’s enough space for the native species to flourish.”
In addition to their work in Overton Park, the team will also work to restore trails and rehabilitate the forest-field edge at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.
