Putin to discuss immigration policy with Russian security council

Moscow, Oct 19 (EFE).- Russian President Vladimir Putin was set to hold a virtual meeting with the Russian Security Council to discuss the issue of immigration and its impact on national security.

“It’s planned to consider issues related to the neutralization of threats to national security in the migration area and the regulation of migration processes in the interests of the socio-economic development of the country and socio-political stability,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

As per the statement, Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chief of the security council, would present a report in this regard.

The issue has assumed special importance after incidents such as the shootout at a training camp for Russian military conscripts on Saturday, in which two immigrants from former Soviet countries opened fire and killed 11 people before being shot dead.

On the other hand, organized legal immigration is of great economic importance for Russia, as it ensures cheap labor force, mainly originating in Central Asia.

Tajikistani President Emomali Rahmon last week urged Putin to not treat Central Asian countries in a condescending manner, unlike the Soviet era.

Another subject that could be discussed in the meeting is the massive outflux of Russian citizens who have fled the country after the partial military draft announced by Kremlin, and the legal measures that can be used to check the mass migration. EFE
