On-Duty Memphis Police Officer, Driver Killed in Crash

MEMPHIS, TN (The Daily Memphian) — An on-duty Memphis police officer and another driver were killed in a two-car crash in the Capleville area Thursday, Jan. 20.
The crash occurred about 2:30 a.m. at East Shelby Drive and Pleasant Hill Road, police said on Twitter.
Preliminary information from MPD states the officer was traveling east on East Shelby Drive when the driver of a car traveling north on Pleasant Hill struck the officer’s patrol car.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was taken to Regional One Hospital, where he later died. The driver, whose name has also not been released, was pronounced dead on the scene.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating since the crash involved an on-duty MPD officer.
The Memphis Police Association identified the officer killed as Corille Jones.
In a post for a fundraiser for the officer’s family, the MPA said, “On January 20, 2022, Officer Corille Jones of the Memphis Police Department was killed as the result of a traffic crash that occurred while on duty. Ofc. Jones was 32 years old and leaves behind two daughters. He proudly served the citizens of Memphis for 1 year and 11 months.”
Authorities shut down all westbound and eastbound lanes of traffic on Shelby Drive between Lamar and Malone Road right after the fatal crash. Motorists were asked to take alternate routes.
