MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Siendo la única cueva en el mundo hecha por el hombre, la Gruta del Santuario de Cristal es una joya artística de Memphis que está situada en el interior del Cementerio “Memorial Park”. Fue diseñada y creada en un período de diez años, a partir de 1937, por el artista y arquitecto Dionicio Rodríguez.
Nacido en Toluca, México, Rodríguez (1891-1955) fue un artista muy popular por su estilo único de transformar el concreto en fantásticas obras de arte, que en realidad parecían ser esculpidas en madera. Su técnica era conocida como Faux Bois (madera falsa en francés) y él calificaba su trabajo como “el método rústico”.
Las puertas, los bancos y las formaciones de rocas artificiales fueron creadas por el artista para invitar a los visitantes a descansar o explorar el paisaje.
Dentro de la gruta hay diez escenas que representan la vida de Jesucristo. Estas escenas fueron realizadas con una técnica mixta de pintura y escultura.
Además de la Gruta del Santuario de Cristal, hay otras esculturas originales realizadas por Rodríguez que se pueden encontrar a lo largo del parque, así como la Cueva de Machpelah, el Puente Cubierto, el Jardín de las Rosas, la Silla de los Deseos de Annie Laurie y el Roble de Abraham.
Tanto las esculturas de Dionicio Rodríguez como el Santuario de la Gruta de Cristal en el Cementerio Memorial Park están incluidas en el Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos.
La Gruta del Santuario de Cristal está abierta al público y no hay que pagar nada para admirarla.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Being the only man-made cave in the world, the Crystal Shrine Grotto is an artistic jewel in Memphis located on the grounds of Memorial Park Cemetery. It was designed and created by Mexican folk artist Dionicio Rodriquez over the course of ten years, beginning in 1937.
Born in Toluca, Mexico, Rodriguez (1891-1955) was noted for his unique style of concrete construction that imitated wood, known as Faux Bois (French for false wood).
Gates, benches, and artificial rock formations were created by the artist to invite visitors to rest or to explore the landscape.
Within the Grotto are ten scenes depicting the life of Jesus and additions to the scenes continued to be added for the next four decades. The scenes were done in a mixed media of paint and sculpture.
Besides the Grotto, there are other original sculptures made by Rodriguez that can be found throughout the park, including the Cave of Machpelah, the Covered Bridge, the Rose Garden, Annie Laurie’s Wishing Chair, and Abraham’s Oak.
Rodriguez’ sculptures and the Crystal Shrine Grotto at Memorial Park are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
