Order of Nile: India, Egypt forge ‘strategic partnership’ during Modi’s 2-day Cairo trip
Cairo, June 25 (EFE).- India and Egypt took their bilateral relations to a new level by signing an agreement on Sunday to forge a “strategic partnership.”
The move is aimed at deepening cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, defense, and security between the two countries.
Egyptian President Abdelfatah el-Sisi signed the agreement with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Cairo for his maiden two-day visit to Egypt.
The spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency Ahmed Fahmy emphasized that the new level of partnership reflected the official and popular relations between Egypt and India.
The new agreement coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
During the meeting at Ittihadiya Palace, el-Sisi and Modi discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations in numerous fields, like communications and information technologies, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy.
They stressed promoting culture and fostering tourism with direct flights between Cairo and the Indian capital.
The two sides signed three agreements in the fields of agriculture, archaeology, and antiquities and competition law.
Modi invited the Egyptian president to participate in the upcoming G20 summit in New Delhi under the Indian presidency.
El-Sisi conferred Modi with the ‘Order of the Nile’, the highest civilian award of Egypt.
Al Sisi expressed “Egypt’s confidence in an active Indian presidency” that would help contain the negative repercussions of international challenges on the global economy.
In Egypt, Modi visited the Heliopolis Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery in Cairo and paid homage to over 4,300 Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in Egypt and Aden during World War 1.
The ties between Egypt and India got a boost when el-Sisi made an official trip to New Delhi in January this year to discuss the fight against terrorism and other issues of common interest.
Before landing in the Arab country for his first official visit, Modi met with US President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday, where they discussed the war in Ukraine and announced collaboration agreements in defense, space, and technology. EFE
