Denmark edge Czech Republic 2-1 on Dolberg’s 3rd goal of Euro 2020

Sports Desk, Jul 3 (EFE).- Denmark are through to the semifinals of the European Championship for the first time since they won the competition in 1992 after besting the Czech Republic 2-1 Saturday in Baku.

The Danes jumped out to the lead in the 5th minute courtesy of Borussia Dortmund defender Thomas Delaney, who sent a downward header into the net off a corner.

Nice striker Kasper Dolberg made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute with his third goal of the tournament.

The Czechs were more dynamic to start the second half and Patrik Schik, the breakout star of Euro 2020, halved the deficit in the 49th minute with his fifth goal in five games.

But the Central European side couldn’t get the equalizer and the dream remains alive for Denmark and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, son of the legendary Peter Schmeichel, captain of the squad that hoisted the trophy 29 years ago.

Denmark have become the sentimental favorites to win Euro 2020 after the drama of their opening match, which saw Christian Eriksen stretchered off the field with cardiac arrest and play suspended for nearly two hours until word came from the hospital that the Danish captain was awake and stable.
