Osaka, holder Krejcikova upset, Swiatek into Roland Garros 2nd round

Paris, May 23 (EFE).- Former world number one Naomi Osaka and defending champion Barbora Krejcikova crashed out of the French Open first round on Monday, while Iga Swiatek extended her impressive winning streak.

Osaka’s first French Open appearance, after she withdrew from last year’s edition amid a fallout with the media, was cut short at the hands of Amanda Anisimova 7-5, 6-4.

Japan’s Osaka failed to avenge her 2022 Australian Open defeat to the US player, who is currently seeded No. 27.

Defending champion Krejcikova, the second seed, squandered a one-set lead to fall to a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 defeat to France’s Diane Parry in two hours and eight minutes.

It was the Czech player’s first competitive appearance since February after recovering from an elbow injury.

Swiatek, the top seed, dropped only two games to earn a 6-2, 6-0 victory over qualifier Lesia Tsurenko in under one hour for her 29th consecutive victory.

Former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka turned around a one-set deficit for a 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 victory over Ana Bogdan, while two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova earned a straight-set win over Anna Bondar. EFE
