Over 86 percent in China have received both doses of Covid-19 vaccine

Beijing, Jan 15 (EFE).- More than 86 percent of China’s population has already received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, according to the National Health Commission data released Saturday.

Until Friday, China had inoculated more than 1.22 billion people, or 86.4 percent of its 1.412 billion inhabitants with both doses, health commission spokesperson Mi Feng said at a press conference.

Last year, the head of the Chinese anti-covid team, epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan, indicated that herd immunity would not be reached until 83.3 percent of the population was vaccinated.

Zhong said then that the lethality of Covid-19 had to fall from the current 1 percent to about 0.1 percent for the country to recover normalcy.

So far, China has been relentless in its zero-tolerance policy on the coronavirus, with strict restrictions on mobility, total or partial lockdowns in response to recurring outbreaks, and the near-total closure of its borders to avoid imported cases. EFE
