Chinese media expects Xi-Biden meeting to mark ‘new beginning’

Bali, Indonesia, Nov 15 (EFE).- The Global Times, China’s official newspaper, published a Tuesday editorial saying it hoped the meeting between the country’s leader Xi Jinping and United States President Joe Biden would be “a new beginning” for bilateral relations.

In a more conciliatory tone than usual, the article said the meeting, held on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, can open the door to “greater communication between China and the US, and be a starting point for the two countries to cooperate through communication.”

“China maintains continuity and stability in its policy toward the US, and has always urged the US to meet halfway, which is not only in mutual interest, but also meets the expectations of the international community,” it added.

The article is in line with the messages sent Monday by both presidents after their meeting, in which they spoke of issues that confront them, such as Taiwan – a self-governing island that Beijing claims – which Washington supports, trade stumbling blocks or the Ukraine War.

“The goal of managing China-US relations well should not be just avoiding conflict,” added the newspaper’s editorial, which unofficially sets China’s views on issues of international concern.

The article called for more meetings, emphasizing that “not all problems can be solved with just one meeting,” but it leaves the belligerent tone of the past months, especially since the August visit to Taiwan of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“The meeting (between Xi and Biden) showed the two superpowers still have many common points of view,” the newspaper said.

Some comments coincide with Biden’s statements a day earlier against the advent of a new Cold War that are also in line with the progress made by the group to avoid the feared clash of blocs for reasons such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

European Council President Charles Michel said Tuesday that G20 members closed a draft joint declaration “in the right direction” to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine, despite the differences between its members. This would be unheard of after a year in which the group has not been able to agree on any document. EFE
