At least 4 killed in Kabul mosque bombing
Kabul, Sep 23 (EFE).- At least four worshipers were killed and 10 injured due to an explosion near a popular mosque in one of the safest zones of the Afghan capital on Friday, said officials.
The explosion occurred when scores of worshipers were leaving the mosque after congregational Friday noon prayers.
“(The) explosion took place in front of the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan mosque after the Friday prayers,” interior ministry spokesperson Abdul Nafi Takoor told EFE.
Takoor said he did not have the casualty details from the bombing.
However, the Italian nonprofit Emergency, which runs one of the main hospitals in Kabul, tweeted that its surgical center had received 14 casualties.
“Four of them were already dead on arrival,” the aid agency said.
The Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Mosque is located in one of the most secured zones in the Afghan capital.
It is just a few hundred meters from the area that houses several embassies and the presidential palace.
No armed group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing.
It was the latest in a series of attacks in Kabul that suffered a wave of bomb attacks in recent months, with incidents in areas considered safe zones even during the war before the Taliban came to power.
Despite the end of the war after the withdrawal of international troops, Afghanistan has suffered several bloody attacks since the Islamists seized Kabul a year ago.
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for most of these attacks.
