Woman Fatally Shot by Police on South Third

MEMPHIS, TN (The Daily Memphian/WMC) — A woman has died after being shot by a Memphis police officer Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 15, according to the Memphis Police Department.

MPD said officers were checking for a stolen vehicle in the area of Third Street and Mitchell Road at 1:57 p.m. Wednesday when they came into contact with a Ford Fusion that had been stolen in Olive Branch.

According to the MPD tweet, the officers attempted to stop the vehicle at Third and Brooks Road, but the female driver refused to stop.

After the suspect struck a Memphis Police vehicle, the MPD officer fired a shot at the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

One other person was detained.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was contacted and will investigate the shooting.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released the identity of a woman.

The woman is identified as 25-year-old Kayla Lucas.

Records show she has a criminal trespass charge from Dec. 8 and was set to appear in court on Jan. 27. She also has a history of previous charges for multiple property thefts, failure to appear in court, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun and several guilty pleas.McAlister said the woman died on the scene and the passenger in the car was detained but not injured. There were also no officers injured.

This was the fourth officer-involved shooting in Memphis and Shelby County this year and the 53rd officer-involved shooting in Tennessee this year. In 2020, 46 officers were involved in shootings in the state.
