Russian cargo spaceship Progress MS-21 disintegrates over Pacific

Moscow, Feb 19 (EFE).- Russian cargo spaceship Progress MS-21 on Sunday exited its orbit after undocking from the international space station and disintegrated over the Pacific Ocean after its reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere, Russian space agency Roscosmos said.

The agency said in a statement that the debris of the spacecraft which were not burned upon reentry fell into an unnavigable region of the South Pacific,.

On Saturday, Roscosmos had suddenly halted the process of bringing the ship out of orbit to carry out a more detailed study of the photographs that cosmonauts had taken of the outer surface of the vehicle after it undocked from the ISS.

Progress had witnessed a leak in air pressure in its coolant system on Feb. 11, although on Saturday the Russian agency insisted that no visible signs of damage had been detected on the outer surface.

The causes behind the pressure leak are still being investigated.

Progress MS-21 had docked at the space platform in October to supply 2.5 tons of water, fuel and food for the astronauts living in space. EFE
