Trump fails in attempt to block access to Jan. 6 files

Washington, Feb 22 (EFE).- The United States Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected former president Donald Trump’s efforts to block the House select committee investigating the assault on the Capitol building from accessing White House documents linked to the incident.

The highest US court refused an appeal by Trump’s team against a lower-court ruling allowing access.

The decision ends Trump’s attempts to prevent lawmakers from accessing the files, which have already been turned over to the committee by the US National Archives.

“Reviewing these documents is essential to gaining a full picture of the events leading up to, during and after the January 6th attack on our Democracy,” House Speaker and Democrat Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

“Now that the Court has ended the former president’s unlawful and dangerous campaign to hide the truth from the American people, the House’s Select Committee to Investigate January 6th will continue its laser focus on finding the truth of that dark day and ensuring it never happens again.”

The exact content of those documents is unknown, but they are allegedly emails, draft speeches and visitation logs that could reveal exactly what happened in the White House during the storming of the Capitol and the days surrounding it.

Some 10,000 people – most of them Trump supporters – marched on Jan. 6, 2021 towards the Capitol and some 800 stormed the building to prevent Democrat Joe Biden’s November 2020 election victory from being ratified.

Five people died and about 140 officers were assaulted during or as a result of the incident. EFE
