At least 14 dead in fire at North Macedonia Covid hospital

Skopje, Sep 9 (EFE).- At least 14 people died after a fire broke out overnight at a hospital for Covid-19 patients in Tetovo, North Macedonia.

The fire started at 9.00 pm (7.00 GMT) and spread rapidly due to flammable material at the hospital, Tetovo fire official Saso Trajcevski said early Thursday.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev described it as a “huge tragedy” in a Facebook post.

“The fire has been extinguished … The fight for life is still going on, and all services reacted sacrificially to save people,” he said.

The identification process is expected to take time because the victims’ bodies are charred and will require a forensic DNA analysis to determine their identities.

The cause of the explosion was being investigated.

The incident comes amid a downward trend in coronavirus cases and related deaths in the region.EFE
