James Gray sheds light on capitalism in autobiographical ‘Armageddon Time’
Cannes, France, May 20 (EFE).- American film director James Gray returned on Friday to the Cannes Film Festival, where he is competing for the Palme d’Or award for the fifth time with his latest movie ‘Armageddon Time’.
The film is an autobiographical coming-of-age memoir of Gray growing up in New York in the 80s, as well as a strong message against inequality and capitalism.
“How do we get everybody rich?” the director said during a press conference in the French riviera.
“Why don’t you look at the system that actually requires a level of oppression so that some people can get all that money?
“There seems to be a lack of discourse about a systemic issue,” he added.
Gray said that capitalism and inequality should be critiqued more and that his film was an opportunity to talk about the issues.
“Where is the critique of capitalism itself which has led to a system of horrendous inequality,” he told reporters.
“I was trying simply to show the layers of that system and that idea of privilege,” he added.
Anne Hathaway, who stars in the movie, said her mother-in-law was an inspiration for her role.
“My mother in law who passed recently was simply the greatest Jewish mother I have ever seen and her legacy influences my life in profound grace that I am truly grateful for,” she said.
“I have some of the best memories that I can claim as an actress on this set,” she added. EFE
