India mourns sudden death of Bollywood singer KK
New Delhi, Jun 1 (EFE).- India’s cinema fans, actors and even politicians on Wednesday flooded social media with messages of shock and condolences, a day after popular singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, better known as KK, died of a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 53.
The singer and composer died on Tuesday night in the eastern city of Kolkata, after being forced to cancel half of his concert due to feeling unwell.
KK was first taken to his hotel and then to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
“Saddened by the untimely demise of noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK. His songs reflected a wide range of emotions as struck a chord with people of all age groups. We will always remember him through his songs. Condolences to his family and fans,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
Popular Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar also paid his condolences by tweeting that he was “extremely sad and shocked” by KK’s death.
The singer, who had shared several videos of his Kolkata concert on Tuesday, was born in New Delhi in 1968 and began his musical career by singing for advertisements, before getting a break in the movies.
His voice represented an entire generation, with hundreds of singles topping the charts after his first song in 1996, Chod Aaye Hum Wo Galiyan – recorded along with three other vocalists – that appeared in a film about insurgency in the northern state of Punjab.
One of KK’s most iconic songs “Pyaar Ke Pal” (moments of love), was widely shared on Wednesday as tributes poured in from across India.
The Bollywood singer’s death comes just a few days after Indian rapper and singer Sidhu Moose Wala, a controversial figure for promoting weapons in his songs, was shot dead near his house in Punjab. EFE
