U.S. Attorney Holds Press Conference Concerning Tyre Nichols Case

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC/LPL/CNN) — Kevin G. Ritz, the United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, provided a statement about the Tyre Nichols investigation on Wednesday, January 25, at 9:30 a.m. at the U.S. attorney’s office on North Main Street.
The U.S. office attorney has opened a criminal and civil rights investigation. According to Ritz, the federal and civil rights investigation will be thorough and methodical.
Ritz also acknowledged the significant public interest in the release of the video shown to the family.
“The state and local authorities have responsibility for determining when to release video from this incident to the public. What I will say on behalf of the federal authorities is that we want people to express their right to be heard, but we want them to do so in a peaceful and non-violent way,” Ritz stated. “Our federal investigation may take some time. These things often do. But we will be diligent, and we will make decisions based on the facts and the law. My office is working hand in hand with the Civil Rights Division in Washington, as well as the FBI and other law enforcement partners. We have been in constant, very constructive communication with the Shelby County District Attorney and state and local law enforcement agencies about this case.”
Tyre Nichols, the Black man who died two weeks ago after a confrontation with Memphis Police, suffered “extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating,” according to preliminary results of an autopsy commissioned by attorneys for his family.
Nichols, 29, was pulled over on January 7 for alleged reckless driving by MPD officers and had a “confrontation” with them before and after he fled the scene on foot, police said. After his arrest, he complained of shortness of breath, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and died three days later.
Five officers have been terminated in connection to Nichols’ death, and two Memphis Fire EMTs have been relieved of duty but no charges have been announced.
