Pope Francis calls for solution to Lebanon’s crisis

Vatican City, Jun 29 (EFE).- Pope Francis on Tuesday called for a solution to the worsening situation in Lebanon, which has been experiencing one of the worst socio-economic crises in its history.

The Vatican is to hold a day of reflection and prayer for Lebanon on 1 July, the Pontiff said, asking the faithful to unite “spiritually so that the great crisis that Lebanon is going through is resolved and show the world its face of peace and hope.”

Over the past 10 months, Lebanon has been through a political deadlock as prime minister-designate Saad Hariri, name in October, has yet to form a government to replace the cabinet that resigned in the wake of Beirut’s devastating explosion.

The country is experiencing its worst economic crisis since a years-long civil war that ended in 1990, with hyperinflation, continuous power cuts and shortages of medicines, medical supplies and fuel.

The Lebanese pound has lost more than 90% of its value since 2019. EFE
