Jacinda Ardern tests positive for coronavirus with mild symptoms

Sydney, Australia, May 14 (EFE).- New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has tested positive for Covid-19 with mild symptoms and is expected to remain in isolation for the next seven days, the government said Saturday.

According to the government statement, Ardern has been isolated since Sunday, when her partner tested positive for the coronavirus.

“The Prime Minister has been symptomatic since Friday evening, returning a weak positive last night and a clear positive this morning on a RAT test. At this stage her symptoms are moderate,” the statement said.

She will be in isolation until May 21 and will not be able to be in parliament next week to present her government’s budgets and the plan to reduce carbon emissions.

“This is a milestone week for the Government and I’m gutted I can’t be there for it,” Ardern said in the statement.

New Zealand, one of the countries that has best managed the covid-19 pandemic, has vaccinated 96 percent of the target population with two doses.

So far, the Oceanic country has recorded over one million cases, including 892 deaths. EFE
