Nato promises to help Ukraine fix energy supply, send more weapons

Bucharest, Nov 29 (EFE).- Nato foreign ministers pledged Tuesday to provide Ukraine with more weapons to defend itself against Russian missile strikes and help repair its damaged energy infrastructure.

Ahead of a meeting in Bucharest, Nato secretary-general said Russia was “trying to use winter as a weapon of war” by targeting Ukraine’s power supply.

Millions of people in Ukraine are facing frigid winter temperatures without electricity or running water.

In a joint statement at the end of the first day of the summit, the foreign ministers said Nato will “assist Ukraine as it repairs its energy infrastructure and protects its people from missile attacks.”

The ministers said Russia’s “aggression,” including “persistent and unconscionable attacks” on civilian and energy infrastructure was “depriving millions of Ukrainians of basic human services.”

At the same time, the allies said they “remain resolute” in their support of Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction and reforms, so that “Ukraine can secure its free and democratic future” and “deter future aggression.”

The allied foreign ministers, who met with their Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, on Tuesday, praised the Ukrainian people’s “heroic defense” of their territory and assured that Nato would maintain its “political and practical support” of Ukraine “for as long as necessary.” EFE
