Palestinian woman shot after trying to stab Israeli soldiers

Jerusalem, May 2 (EFE).- A Palestinian women on Sunday was shot and wounded after trying to stab a group of Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank, security officials said.

“An assailant armed with a knife attempted to stab IDF soldiers at the Gush Etzion Junction,” a statement by the Israeli Defense Forces said.

“A soldier fired toward the assailant and neutralized her. No IDF injuries were reported.”

The woman, in her 60s, was in a serious condition with gunshot wounds to the leg, and was attended to by Israeli emergency medical services, according to local media outlets.

The incident took place at the Gush Etzion Junction, near the Palestinian town of Bethlehem. The checkpoint was also the scene of an attack on January 31, when a Palestinian man was shot dead by Israel soldiers after he allegedly tried to stab one of the troops.

Sporadic Palestinian attacks against Israeli settlers or security forces occur in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Tensions have been high of late, particularly in and around Jerusalem’s Old City, after police blocked Palestinians from congregating at Damascus Gate during Ramadan.

Palestinian legislative elections coming up this month — the first due to be held since 2006 — have also been delayed, adding to the  tensions in the West Bank.

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday that the vote would be postponed until Israel allows Palestinians from East Jerusalem to take part. EFE
