N Korea shows ballistic missiles, tactical atomic weapons in major parade

Seoul, Feb 9 (EFE).- North Korean state media announced Thursday the regime displayed intercontinental-range ballistic missiles and tactical nuclear weapons at a military parade in Pyongyang to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the army.

The KCNA news agency said the Wednesday parade displayed the missiles equipped with the “maximum” atomic attack capacity and “tactical nuclear units,” a section of its arsenal the regime has developed with special interest in recent years.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was at the event, as shown by photos released by KCNA of him waving from the rostrum, although the agency did not mention him delivering a speech during the event.

The text also said the leader, who appears wearing a long black coat and matching fedora hat accompanied by members of the presidium of the single party central committee, attended the event with his wife Ri Sol-ju. Also in attendance was his daughter, whose name is believed to be Kim Ju-ae and who in recent months has begun appearing alongside her parents at major events.

High-precision photos taken by a US company Maxar satellite Thursday show large numbers of what appear to be launch-erector transporters carrying missiles, suggesting the regime may have displayed a record number of this weaponry in a parade.

Some analysts even said the regime could have shown new solid fuel missiles.

When asked Thursday at a press conference about it, South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff Spokesman Lee Sung-jun, said southern and US intelligence services “are carrying out a detailed analysis” based on material and various information.

In the last year, Pyongyang has further hardened its rhetoric and carried out about 50 missile launches, a record number, in many cases in response to military tests carried out by Seoul and Washington, which has caused an unseen level of tension on the peninsula. EFE
