Argentina’s foreign minister begins trade-focused visit to India

New Delhi, Apr 24 (EFE).- Argentina’s foreign minister began an official visit to India on Sunday focused on trade and the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Santiago Cafiero met his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in New Delhi in the morning.

“A productive meeting with FM Santiago Cafiero of Argentina on his first visit to India,” Jaishankar said in a message in Spanish on Twitter accompanied by photographs of the meeting.

“Discussed expanding our bilateral trade and cooperating in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, electronics, e-mobility, defense and atomic energy,” he added.

The Indian foreign minister said that the two countries “will work closely in the G20 and multilateral forums” amid global instability due to the war in Ukraine and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Argentine foreign ministry had also announced in a statement that the ministers would begin talks during the meeting to launch a cooperation forum between India and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, currently chaired by Argentina, to “strengthen extra-regional dialog” of the bloc.

Cafiero is also scheduled on Sunday to launch the Commission for the Dialogue on the Question of the Malvinas Island, an archipelago under British rule and whose sovereignty Argentina claims.

This event comes just two days after the conclusion of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official visit to India.

On Monday the Argentine minister will attend the inauguration of the seventh edition of India’s flagship conference on geopolitics and geoeconomics, the Raisina Dialogue, and on Tuesday he will take part in one of the conversation panels.

On Wednesday, Cafiero will travel to India’s financial capital, Mumbai, where he will visit the radioisotope production plant being built in collaboration with Argentine state-owned company Invap and will meet representatives of the Confederation of Indian Industry before concluding his visit.

The Argentine foreign minister arrived in New Delhi from Italy, where he held meetings at the headquarters of United Nations agencies including the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the Food and Agriculture Organization and met his Italian counterpart, Luigi di Maio. EFE
