Roundup: UK daily cases top 10,000 due to ‘delay,’ figures rise in Europe

Madrid Desk, Oct 4 (efe-epa).- Health authorities in the United Kingdom added more than 10,000 new Covid-19 cases to the national tally but blamed the spike on technical issues and daily cases in Germany remained above 2,000 on Sunday.

UNITED KINGDOM

The UK’s department of health and social care reported 12,872 Covid-19 cases on Sunday but said the significant uptick was the result of delays caused by a now-resolved technical issue in data collection.

The jump in figures came after some 264,000 PCR tests were processed in a single day.

The UK’s prime minister Boris Johnson told the BBC on Sunday that the public had to act “fearlessly but with common sense” to beat the virus.

“I tell you in all candour, it will continue to be bumpy through to Christmas and may even be bumpy beyond,” he added.

ITALY

Italy’s government is mulling fresh restrictions as the number of daily cases continues to rise.

Health authorities logged 2,758 new cases in the last 24 hours although testing figures were much lower than the previous day. Some 92,714 tests were sent in for Sunday’s data, 26,000 fewer than the previous 24-hour period.

There were 2,844 new cases reported Saturday.
