Preparations for UN Climate Change Summit kick off in Bonn

Berlin, Jun 6 (EFE).- The United Nation’s Climate Change Conference in Bonn kicked off on Monday in preparation for the upcoming COP27 meeting to be held in Egypt in the fall.

Nearly 200 delegations are to take part in the annual technical conference which aims to lay the groundwork for the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit.

“We need your political plans, decisions and actions now. And we need to see progress here in Bonn if we are to ultimately succeed in November,” UN’s executive secretary for climate change, Patricia Espinosa, said during her opening speech.

“I fully recognize that none of these issues are easy, especially now and especially in the context of our current geopolitical situation. We all know that the world of COP27 will look nothing like it did for COP26,” she added.

The conference in Bonn is expected to increase pressure on countries that have not yet made net-zero emissions commitments and those that have to bring forward their deadlines.

Negotiations on funding targets beyond 2025 are to continue and, according to Espinosa, there is still “hope” to hit the $100 billion mark that could not be reached in 2020. EFE
