Memphis Police to Crack Down on ATVs on City Streets
MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WREG) — La policía de Memphis informó haber recibido numerosas quejas sobre motos ilegales y vehículos todo terreno que viajan por las calles de la ciudad.
Los oficiales dijeron que se vuelve más una tendencia durante los meses más cálidos. En respuesta, el MPD aumentará las patrullas para abordar el uso ilegal de ATVS.
“Si no están registrados, no pueden estar en las calles de Memphis. Están hechos para ser utilizados fuera de los caminos , “dijo el Coronel Paul Wright.
MPD dijo que se ha notado un aumento en grupos numerosos que los usan de forma ilegal, especialmente en el área del centro de la ciudad.
Las áreas problemáticas se encuentran en Tom Lee Park y Martin Luther King Riverside Park, entre otros lugares. Los oficiales aumentarán la presencia en áreas problemáticas conocidas.
Las sanciones pueden ser de un delito menor a un delito grave, o citación
“Hay muchos problemas con ellos en grupos grandes. “Algunos parecen pensar que está bien meterse en la carretera y viajar en grupos grandes, pero esa no es la forma correcta de conducir”, dijo Wright.
Los documentos de la corte muestran un ejemplo de eso, con Lee Gathings y Demarcus Hodges arrestados después de manejar un vehículo todo terreno en un gran grupo en el centro.
Según la declaración jurada, los hombres se encontraban en el área de Union Avenue “conduciendo a una alta velocidad a través de las calles abarrotadas, haciendo “caballitos” y realizando “donas” en medio de calles abarrotadas”.
“Estás poniendo en riesgo a otros automovilistas y en realidad estás frenando el flujo de tráfico en una vía pública”, dijo Wright.
MPD está pidiendo a las personas de la comunidad que llamen al 901-545-COPS si ven que ocurre este tipo de actividad ilegal.

MEMPHIS, TN (WREG) — Memphis police reported receiving numerous complaints about illegal dirt bikes and ATVs traveling on city streets.
Officers said it becomes more of a trend during the warmer months. In response, MPD will increase patrols to address the illegal use of ATVS.
“If they’re not registered, they can’t be on the streets of Memphis. They’re made to be ridden on off-roads,” Col. Paul Wright said.
MPD said it’s noticed an increase in large groups illegally riding, especially in the downtown area.
Problem areas are in Tom Lee Park and Martin Luther King Riverside Park, among other places. Officers will increase presence in known problem areas
Penalties can be from a misdemeanor to felony, or citation
“There are a lot of issues with them riding in large groups. Some seem to think it’s OK to get in the roadway and ride in large groups but that’s not the proper way to ride,” Wright said.
Court documents show an example of that, with Lee Gathings and Demarcus Hodges arrested after riding an ATV in a large group downtown.
According to the arrest affidavit, the men were in the area of Union Avenue “driving at a high rate of speed through crowded streets, popping wheelies and performing donuts in the middle of crowded streets.”
“You’re putting other motorists’ at risk and you’re actually slowing down the flow of traffic on a public roadway,” Wright said.
MPD is asking for people in the community to call 901-545-COPS if they see this kind of illegal activity happening.
