Israel launches airstrikes in Gaza for 2nd consecutive day

Jerusalem, Sep 12 (EFE).- Israel launched airstrikes in the Gaza Strip for the second day in a row in response to a rocket attack from the Hamas-controlled territory, Israel’s Defense Forces said Sunday.

“Fighter jets and attack helicopters struck a Hamas military compound containing several underground rocket production workshops, a Hamas military camp with a weapons storage site, a Hamas terror tunnel, and a Hamas military training facility,” the Israeli Air Force wrote on Twitter.

“The IDF will not accept a situation in which terrorist organizations act against Israeli civilians,” it added.

It was the second consecutive day that the Israeli military responded to a rocket attack launched into its territory but which was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.

Israel holds Hamas, the de facto ruler of the coastal enclave, responsible for any attacks originating out of the strip.

No injuries were reported in the airstrikes on Gaza, which has been under the Israeli blockade since 2007 when Hamas took control.

Tensions have been on the rise in recent days, after four of the six Palestinian fugitives who dug their way out of an Israeli high-security prison last week were captured.

In recent weeks, Israel has eased some restrictions imposed on Gaza. However, the two sides fought for 11 days in May, leaving 260 people killed in Gaza and 13 others in Israel. It also left millions of dollars worth of damage in the strip.

The flare-up ended on May 21, after Egypt brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.EFE
