Germany overcome spirited Austria in Women’s Euro quarterfinal

Sports Desk, Jul 21 (EFE).- Eight-time Women’s Euro champions Germany bested Austria 2-0 Thursday to advance to the semifinals for the 10th time, but the game was more competitive than the score would indicate.

The Austrians were denied by the post on three occasions and Germany – who saw two of their shots bounce off the woodwork, had to wait until the final minute of regulation for a second goal.

Next up for the Germans will be the winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal between France and holders the Netherlands.

Austria made a good start in front of 16,000-plus at London’s Brentford Community Stadium and the first two chances fell to the underdogs, but Julia Hickelsberger-Fuller sent the ball straight to German goalkeeper Merle Frohms and Marina Georgieva’s powerful header off a corner in the 14th minute was repelled by the post.

Lina Magull put Germany ahead in the 25th minute after an Austrian giveaway.

Austria keeper Manuela Zinsberger stopped Giulia Gwinn in the 33rd to keep the margin to one goal.

Withstanding a wave of German attacks early in the second half, Austria continued to put pressure on Frohms, who needed help from the cross-bar and the post, respectively, to thwart Barbara Dunst and Sara Puntigam.

And Germany’s Klara Bühl hit the cross-bar before Alexandra Popp transformed a botched clearance by Zinsberger into her fourth goal of the tournament. EFE msg/dr
