UN Security Council approves Secretary-General Guterres reelection

United Nations, Jun 8 (EFE).- The United Nations Security Council recommended Tuesday the reelection of António Guterres as secretary-general of the international institution.

The Security Council recommendation is the most important step in the designation of the head of the UN.

The decision will move on to the General Assembly, which needs to ratify Guterres’ election for a second five-year term starting January 2022.

Guterres has no official opponents running for the position, so his reelection at the head of the UN is expected to become official next week.

Before his appointment as secretary-general of the UN, 72 year-old Guterres was prime minister of Portugal in 1995-2002, and then served for a decade as UN high commissioner for refugees. EFE
