Spanish royals preside over remembrance service for Covid-19 victims
Madrid, Jul 15 (EFE).- Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia presided over the second state memorial for Covid-19 victims on Thursday.
Some 700 people attended the event at the Royal Palace, in Madrid, to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the pandemic.
The Spanish government and highest representatives of the state were all present at the solemn ceremony.
The government has posthumously awarded the Civil Merit Grand Cross medal to 125 Spanish health workers who have died from Covid-19 during the pandemic.
Their family members will collect the merit with recognition from King Felipe.
Since records began following Spain’s first Covid-19 outbreak in early 2020, the country has officially registered over 4 million cases and 81,000 deaths.
More than 22.5 million people — 47% of the population — have had a full course of a Covi-19 vaccine, according to health ministry data.
