Power restored in Pakistan after major breakdown
Multan, Pakistan, Jan 24 (EFE).- Electricity was restored in Pakistan on Tuesday morning after a major power outage caused a blackout across the country, including in the capital Islamabad and financial hub of Karachi.
An energy ministry statement said all grid stations across the country were working now.
Ministry spokesperson Sohail Atiq said power generating plants started shutting down one by one on Monday due to some frequency variation and voltage fluctuation in the south of the country,
Power was restored in Islamabad in the late evening and at midnight in most of the cities.
Pakistan is facing a severe economic crisis forcing the government to draw a new energy conservation plan and reduce consumption.
The plan included the early closure of markets and malls and restrictions on low-efficiency energy products.
According to experts, Pakistan’s peak summer electricity usage is around 29,000 MW up from 12,000 MW in winter.
As per the energy ministry, the total power generation was 9,704 MW on Tuesday morning.
Pakistan, a population of 220 million, had similar outages in recent years.
The largest outage was in May 2018, when a technical glitch caused several power plants to go offline. EFE
