Premios Anuales a la Libertad honran a pioneros en derechos civiles y humanos

27th Annual Freedom Awards Honors Trailblazers In Civil And Human Rights

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/localmemphis.com) — El vicepresidente Joe Biden, el líder de los derechos civiles Jesse Jackson y el filántropo Pitt Hyde fueron los galardonados en los Premios Anuales numero 27 a la Libertad del Museo nacional de Los Derechos Civiles.

Es el evento emblemático del museo que honra a las personas sobresalientes por sus contribuciones a los derechos civiles y humanos.

Los tres homenajeados fueron reconocidos el miércoles por la noche, no solo por su trabajo en Memphis, sino en todo el país. Cientos de personas llenaron el Teatro Orpheum para elogiar las obras de estos hombres durante una ceremonia llena de estrellas.

Uno de los galardonados, J.R. Pitt Hyde III, el creador de AutoZone, también es reconocido por ayudar a convertir el Motel Lorraine en el Museo Nacional de los Derechos Civiles.

“Todo esto comenzó con tratar de convertir una visión trágica con algo positivo para Memphis y para el país. Y, por supuesto, llega tan lejos en todos esos aspectos y es genial estar asociado con todos estos años”, dijo Hyde.

El evento comenzó con una Gala previa al espectáculo en el Halloran Center, seguida de la ceremonia de entrega de premios en el Orpheum.

“Todos los años queremos obtener una mezcla. Ahora generalmente tratamos de conseguir hombres y mujeres, este año fue solo una de esas cosas que cayeron donde todos teníamos hombres. Pero creo que tres hombres realmente honorables”, dijo Terri. Freeman, presidente del Museo Nacional de Derechos Civiles.

Otros galardonados incluyen al Reverendo Jesse Jackson Senior, quien desempeñó un papel fundamental en el Movimiento por los Derechos Civiles y al Vicepresidente Joe Biden, quien ha sido reconocido por su trabajo en justicia penal y asuntos internos.

“Necesitamos renovar esta lucha ahora, necesitamos renovarla, porque cuando se trata de libertad, lo que a menudo encontramos es que la esperanza a menudo sigue el mismo camino que el odio”, dijo Biden durante su discurso de aceptación.

La ciudad de Memphis espera que este evento sea anual.

“Como líderes de la Celebración de los Derechos Civiles y de los Derechos Civiles, es importante no solo para Memphis sino para todo el país, y Memphis ha estado a la vanguardia durante 50 años y estamos celebrando ese legado esta noche”, dijo el Alcalde de Memphis Jim Strickland.

También hubo un homenaje especial a la difunta Aretha Franklin. El hijo y nietos de Franklin asistieron a los Premios de la Libertad en su honor.

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) — Vice President Joe Biden, civil rights leader Jesse Jackson and Philanthropist Pitt Hyde were the honorees at the National Civil Rights Museum’s 27th Annual Freedom Awards.

It is the museum’s signature event that honors outstanding individuals for their contributions to civil and human rights.

All three of the honorees were recognized Wednesday night, not only for their work in Memphis, but across the nation.  Hundreds of people packed the Orpheum Theatre to praise the works of these men during a star-studded ceremony.

One of the honorees, J.R. Pitt Hyde III, the creator of AutoZone, is also credited for helping to turn the Lorraine Motel into the National Civil Rights Museum.

“This all started with trying to turn a tragic sight with something positive for Memphis and for the country. And of course it comes so far in all of those respects and it’s just great in being associated with it all these years,” Hyde said.

The event started with a Pre-Show Gala at the Halloran Centre, followed by the awards ceremony at the Orpheum.

“Every year we kind of want to get a mix. Now usually we try to get men and women, this year it was just one of those things that fell where we had all men.  But three really honorable men I think,” said Terri Freeman, President of the National Civil Rights Museum.

Other honorees include Reverend Jesse Jackson Senior who played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement and Vice President Joe Biden who has been recognized for his work in criminal justice and internal affairs.

“We need to renew this struggle now, we need to renew the fight, because when it comes to freedom what we often find is hope often follows on the same track as hate,” Biden said during his acceptance speech.

The City of Memphis looks forward to this annual event.

“As a Celebration of Civil Rights and Civil Rights leaders it’s important not only for Memphis but for the entire country and Memphis has been on the leading edge of that for 50 years and we are celebrating that legacy tonight,” said Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland.

There was also a special tribute to the late Aretha Franklin.  Franklin’s son and grandchildren attended the Freedom Awards in her honor.
