Japan records trade surplus of $2.49 billion in February

Tokyo, Mar 17 (efe-epa).- Japan recorded a trade surplus of 271.38 billion yen ($2.49 billion) in February, the government announced on Wednesday.

The positive balance is 80.5 percent lower than in the same month of 2020 but contrasts with the deficit of 325.38 billion yen recorded in January, according to data published by the finance ministry.

Japan’s exports declined by 4.5 percent year-on-year in the second month of the year to 6.04 trillion yen.

Imports, on the other hand, increased by 11.8 percent year-on-year to 5.82 trillion yen.

By country, with its largest trading partner China, Japan registered a trade deficit of 271.58 billion yen, compared to the surplus recorded a year earlier.

With the world’s biggest economy and its second-largest trading partner, the United States, the Asian country recorded a surplus of 472.67 billion yen, a year-on-year decrease of 24.5 percent.

With the European Union, its third-biggest trading partner, Japan posted a deficit of 40.21 billion yen, 124.9 percent more than the negative balance it recorded with the bloc in February 2020.

The Asian country narrowed its trade deficit with Brazil by 55.2 percent to 26.65 billion yen and by 24.6 percent with Chile to 56.9 billion yen.

Japan recorded a surplus of 54.23 billion yen with Mexico, a year-on-year increase of 44.4 percent. EFE-EPA
