Paint Memphis Undaunted By Vandalism To Murals

Paint Memphis will forge ahead with its 2021 mural-making festival next month, but will also finish repairing and applying anti-graffiti coating to last year’s murals that were damaged by a vandal.

More than 100 artists are expected to participate in the 2021 Paint Memphis festival. They will converge on a 72-year-old building at 660 South B.B. King Blvd., a masonry structure that will be the canvas for this year’s artwork.

In its seventh year, Paint Memphis coordinates with property owners to enliven dull or blighted areas with the talents of volunteer artists.

The 2020 event took place in Uptown, on old buildings at North Front Street and Henry Avenue.

That’s where Paint Memphis will return to repair murals and coat them with five to seven gallons of anti-graffiti coating, which costs $100 per gallon, Golightly said.

Within a few weeks after the October 2020 event, someone spoiled murals there by painting “Karen” across them.

Neither Golightly nor participating artists said they know the vandal’s motivation or can decipher any intended message.

But the result was substantial damage to the art.
