Prince Harry, Meghan Markle to join Biden in pro-coronavirus vaccine concert

Los Angeles, Apr 28 (EFE).- Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle are to join dozens of stars and US President Joe Biden on May 8 for a Covid-19 vaccine benefit concert in Los Angeles.

The show, dubbed Vax Live and organised by US NGO Global Citizen, is aimed at increasing confidence in the coronavirus vaccine and raising funds for the World Health Organisation’s COVAX scheme, which brings jabs to the most vulnerable countries.

According to local media reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to preside over the concert, which will be hosted by US singer Selena Gomez.

The streamed event will also feature musical performances by stars like Jennifer Lopez, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Foo Fighters, E.L.L.E. and J. Balvin.

“Over the past year, our world has experienced pain, loss, and struggle—together. Now we need to recover and heal—together,” the Sussexes said in a statement.

“We can’t leave anybody behind. We will all benefit, we will all be safer, when everyone everywhere has equal access to the vaccine,” they added.

Harry and Meghan will join the event to “pursue equitable vaccine distribution, and in that, restore faith in our common humanity”.

Other celebrities from the world of film and television have been invited to the event, such as Ben Affleck, Chrissy Teigen, David Letterman, Gayle King, Jimmy Kimmel and Sean Penn, who are expected to promote vaccinations with their messages.

According to the organizers, Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, among others, will make special appearances.

The organisers stressed that some 2 billion vaccines are needed to serve approximately 30% of the highest-risk populations in low-income countries.EFE
