Roundup: 1st Covid reinfection death, WHO warns against national lockdowns

Madrid Desk, Oct 13 (efe-epa).- The first death from Covid-19 reinfection was reported in the Netherlands on Tuesday while the World Health Organization warned national lockdowns should be a “last resort.”

Elsewhere in Europe, Italy and France announced new restrictions, Russia reported a record number of daily cases and Poland’s prime minister went into quarantine.

WHOThe World Health Organization warned that reimposing lockdowns, as some European countries have done in the face of rising infection rates, should be a “last resort.”

WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said at a press conference that severe restrictions on movement that keep people at home and limit their ability to work and socialize should be the final recourse to prevent health services from becoming overwhelmed.

He warned that these measures are not sustainable due to their significant social and economic impact and that national-scale lockdowns cannot be the “default control measure.”

Jasarevic promoted other tools to control the pandemic, including handwashing, social distancing, wearing masks and tracking and trace systems.

NETHERLANDSAn 89-year-old woman in the Netherlands died from Covid-19 in the first known case of a death from reinfection.

The patient was one of 25 known cases of reinfection globally and had a rare form of incurable bone marrow cancer which aggravated the impact of the virus.

Virologist Marion Koopmans said she was admitted to hospital for five days in the first wave of infections with a fever and severe cough and tested positive for the virus.

She was readmitted to hospital two months later after restarting chemotherapy treatment with a fever, cough and severe shortness of breath and died two weeks later.
