Pro-Russian militias leader claim capture of Mariupol port

Moscow, Apr 11 (EFE).- Pro-Russian militias on Monday claimed to have captured the port area of the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

The development was announced by Denis Pushilin, the separatist leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.

“As for the port of Mariupol, it is now under our control,” he told Russian public TV.

Ukrainian fighters remained in the Azovstal steelwork area, in the suburbs of the Mariupol, where fierce fighting has been going on for several weeks, he said.

“According to our calculations, along with Azovstal there are still nationalists, several thousand. The number that appears most often in war reports is between 1,500 and 3,000 people,” he added.

The besieged city of Mariupol, located on the Sea of Azov, has been a major target of invading Russian forces and their separatist allies since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in late February.EFE
