Protesting fans storm Old Trafford, Utd-Liverpool game delayed
London, 2 May (EFE).- Around 200 Manchester United fans stormed into Old Trafford and made it onto the pitch on Sunday, just a couple of hours before United were due to kick off their Premier League game against arch rivals Liverpool.
The game, which was due to start at 4.30 pm local time, has been delayed.
Both teams will remain at their respective hotels until the hundreds of fans outside the stadium protesting against the Glazer family, the American owners of Manchester United, are cleared, according to broadcaster Sky Sports.
The supporters are calling on the Glazers to leave the club over their part in the failed breakaway Super League proposal.
Manchester United, as well as the other five richest Premier League clubs, have pulled out of the plans to take part in the elite continental tournament, and the owners have issued an apology, but those steps have not appeased the United supporters.
A few days ago, a small group of fans invaded the training ground, where coach Ole Gunner Solskjaer had to ask them to leave.
Besides Manchester United, the Super League initiative involved Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur from the Premier League; Italian clubs Inter Milan, Juventus and A.C. Milan; and Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid. EFE
