Lewandowski rescues point for Poland against Spain

Sports Desk, Jun 19 (EFE).- Robert Lewandowski’s goal in the 54th minute turned out to be enough Saturday for Poland to secure a 1-1 draw with Spain and remain alive in Euro 2020.

After earning the European Golden Shoe with 48 goals in 40 matches for Bayern Munich last season, Lewandowski was criticized for failing to make an impact in the 2-1 loss to Slovakia in the Euro opener.

Spain’s top striker, Alvaro Morata, likewise the target of criticism in the wake of La Roja’s scoreless draw with Sweden, may have allayed some doubts Saturday when he put his team ahead with a goal in the 25th minute.

Lewandowski brought the Poles level with a superb header, but Jakub Moder’s foul against Gerard Moreno at the other end three minutes later left Spain poised to reclaim the edge.

Moreno, who was perfect from the spot for Villarreal in LaLiga last season, hit the post with his kick and Morata fired wide on the follow-up.

Spain, the European champions in 2008 and 2012, are third in Group E on 2 points, behind Sweden with 4 and Slovakia, who are on 3 points.

La Roja host Slovakia in Seville next Wednesday, while Sweden and Poland face off the same day in Saint Petersburg.

Spain will advance to the knockout stage if they beat the Slovaks, regardless of the outcome of the other Group E match. EFE
