North Korea celebrates workers’ party anniversary without military parade

Tokyo, Oct 10 (EFE).- North Korea on Sunday marked the 76th anniversary of the country’s sole political party, the Workers’ Party of Korea, without the usual military parade.

North Korean media outlets did not report large-scale celebrations or a military parade on the occasion, unlike last year, when the party’s founding day was celebrated with pomp and style at the capital’s Kim Il-sung square.

“No signs of the North preparing for a military parade were detected,” South Korean news agency Yonhap said citing military sources,

North Korean official daily Rodong Sinmun reported that small ceremonies were held by the Socialist Women’s Union of Korea, while poetry was recited and songs were sung by members of the Union of Agricultural Workers.

In 2020, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the WKP, Pyongyang had held a major military parade, mobilizing a large amount of equipment and personnel.

North Korea celebrates all anniversaries of the party’s foundation as major state functions, where the regime often displays its latest advances in weapons and technology as a show of strength.

Although in the past Pyongyang has often aired many of parades live, at times it has avoided doing so, ostensibly to avoid provoking the United States. EFE
